After a summer of sun exposure, no matter how vigilant you are with your SPF applications - I think we can all agree that a fall freshen up is necessary!
My favorite fall treatment is known as IPL - Intense Pulse Light or Phototherapy.
IPL uses a broad spectrum light source to target irregularities in the skin - being reds and browns. The treatment is designed to even out complexion, improve texture, pore size and fine lines.
How does it work?
The pulsed light source is targets pigment (brown sun damage) and hemoglobin (blood vessels and erythemic flush). The light and heat from the device cause pigment on the skin to shatter. Sometimes you may see initial darkening of brown spots, and then after a few days a micro-crust will rise to the surface of the skin and slough off naturally. It is really important not to pick at the micro-crusts, as tempting as it may be! They appear almost like coffee ground, and will slough off naturally in 4-10 days. The light and heat from the device cause the vessels that make your skin appear flushed to coagulate. After the treatment our body disposes of the excess reds and browns as waste products.
The treatment itself takes about 30 minutes. It has a snapping feeling, but overall discomfort is minimal. For best results it is recommended to have three to five treatments spaced two weeks apart.
After the completion of your treatments you will see a reduction in both pigment, and redness as well as pore size, and fine lines. You can expect improvement in your overall skin texture, and you will notice your skin will exude a more youthful, healthy and radiant glow.
